In the beginning of Dir en grey, Shinya had been transformed from his rather gawky La:Sadies look to the glossy image that fans came to know. His hair was long, and been dyed a very bright red, which has probably been the most exotic hair color he's had to this date. His taste in dress was long-skirted dresses in a variety of styles, and his make-up was light and dusty, different from that of his bandmates.
Eventually, he dyed his hair to more memorable colors: a reddish-brown, and blonde. He'd style it in a variety of different styles, with curls, pinned up, left loose etc. and had even began to accessorize. Of course, eventually his poor hair began to give under all the abuse, forcing him to cut it in '99 to about chin-length. During this period he had dyed it several times, from a dark brown to a brownish-orange, and back to his usual blonde. He had let it grow out a little more, and by July of 2002 had introduced a layered style that marked a huge turning point in Dir en grey's visual image. He cut it yet again early this year, dying it a shade of orange, making it the shortest it has been in the history of his membership with Dir en grey. Currently it's a pale blonde, reaching past his shoulders.
Shinya's style in dress has become as much of a roller coaster ride as his hair style. From the long dresses, to short skirts, and even adorning pants on occassion, Shinya has more or less struted it all. Though in recent years, as of July 2002, his trademark crossdressing has become rather watered down as opposed to his previous image. Though he usually keeps it rather modest, on occasions he has shown some skin.
There's been a huge evolution from '97 to now. In the abandonment of the rather heavy image associated with visual rock, Shinya still shows traces of what his image use to be, even though they're rather vague, and very few. However his image is ever changing, and surprises lurk around the corners of the future, so who knows how long it will be before this essay has become outdated.
