Dir en grey is a visual rock band that was formed in February, 1997. Originally the band La:Sadies, when bassist Kisaki left out of the desire of remaining indies, the others moved on. Recruiting a new bassist, they took on a new name: Dir en grey. The new line up (and has been for the last six years) became: Kyo (vocals), Kaoru (guitar), Die (guitar), Toshiya (bass), and Shinya (drums)

They made their debut with the album MISSA. It wasn't until 1998 that they began to gain some popularity with the release of several singles, and it wasn't until the release of the single I'll that they really began to get noticed. I'll broke indies singles record sales and earned it the #7 spot on the Oricon charts making them the first indies band to accomplish such a feat. Since it's been nothing but uphill.

In 1999, they sought after Yoshiki, ex-member of their idol band X-Japan. Yoshiki became the producer of the GAUZE singles. However, they soon went off on their own the next year, and have been producing their own stuff ever since, maturing in their sound on their own.

In the six years they've been around Dir en grey has secured fans all over the world (mostly through the internet). Their always changing image and sound has kept old fans intrigued and attracted new fans along the way. Armed with their strong passion for music, and a strong bond of friendship there is hardly a doubt that Dir en grey will last for as long as they want to, and that we'll be seeing them for a good few years to come.
