Shinya is a difficult person to get a closer look at since he's rather quiet and keeps to himself. He doesn't speak very much, and the things he says during interviews are sometimes misunderstood. However, despite his serious appearence, he does seem to have traces of a sense of humor and can be rather childlike in some things he does.

His secretive nature is not reserved for only the public, but extends to his fellow band members. It's commonly known that he didn't even give his home phone number to the other members for about half a year, and that they had only discovered he had gotten a computer because he mentioned it in an interview. He explained that it was because he didn't find it very important.

The biggest thing that he has kept a secret is his love life. Whenever asked such questions in interviews, he cleverly dodges them by either ignoring the question, passing his turn, or simply refusing to answer. He had once said that he doesn't even tell his closest friends the answers to love related questions. He also commented that he may start answering such questions when he's thirty, but it seems unlikely.

As for his childlike nature, if you delve into some of the video clips and even into some interviews you will notice that Shinya isn't really as serious as many believe. He laughs quite a bit, though it may not be as much as some, and he has a bit of a sense of humor, though it may not be obvious. He said once that he was a child in response to Toshiya's probing his refusal to answer love-related questions. This childish quality in his personality doesn't surface very often, but more often than believed. Its presence only proves to make Shinya an even more complex character and harder to figure out.
