Shinya is the youngest of Dir en grey, recently turning twenty-six on the twenty-fourth of February. He was an only child, born in Osaka during the year of the horse (1978). His zodiac sign is Pisces and his blood type is B. He stands at 170 cm and weighs 46 kg. He once said that his average body fat count was 4%.

Shinya has been playing in bands since he was around sixteen. The most popular band he was in before Dir en grey was La:Sadies, the indies band that was the beginning of Dir en grey. When Dir en grey was formed in 1997 he would have been 18, going on 19, which is rather young for a member of a mainstream band. Being the youngest, as well as the most "distant" member of the group, Shinya often gets teased by the other members, mostly Die and Kaoru, though Toshiya seems to do a fair amount of teasing as well. He is considered to be the strongest member of the group, despite his fragile appearance because of his abilities as a drummer and his persistance. Aside from being the drummer, Shinya also contributes his talents to composition, composing songs such as Yurameki and umbrella in his time.

One of Shinya's "hobbies" is keeping track of the Oricon charts. He even predicts who is going to be placed where time to time. It seems his prefered music is pop music, even though he still has a liking for rock music. His favorite band is X-Japan and he idolizes Yoshiki.

It's a well known fact that Shinya is probably the most quiet member of Dir en grey. He admits to not liking to talk, and because of this he keeps things like phone calls very short. He once said that his longest phone conversation was around fifteen minutes long. Shinya said that when was younger he talked a lot. It wasn't until junior high till he started to "not like talking", though he wasn't really sure as to why.

One of the only looks into Shinya's personal life that we have is that he is a proud owner of a little Chihuahua, Miyu, who is the only thing he admits to loving, along with Puppy, a Papillon who stays with his parents in Osaka. When he was asked what was the three most important things in his life he responded: 1. His dog (Miyu) 2. His parents' dog (Puppy) and 3. Dir en grey. His rather doting treatment of Miyu clarifies this statement.

Shinya is said to be rather picky about his food. He doesn't like vegetables, but does try to eat healthy despite his soft spot for ice cream. He is the only Dir en grey member who doesn't smoke because he hates cigarettes.
